With all the recent successful adaptations of famous superheroes, from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, etc, it was inevitable the makers of Scary Movie, and The Naked Gun, would attempt this spoof movie. The story follows the Spider-Man plot, with a couple of bits from Batman Begins, X-Men and Fantastic Four thrown in. So teenager Rick Riker (Drake & Josh's Drake Bell) gets bitten by a dragonfly, which is what he becomes, he is an orphan living with Uncle Albert (Leslie Nielsen) and Aunt Lucille Adams (Marion Ross), he is in love with Jill Johnson (Sara Paxton) but can't say it, Lou Landers (Christopher McDonald) has turned himself into energy sucking enemy The Hourglass, and Rick, or Dragonfly, is saving the day. The fart gags are always a giggle, the many faces, and the recognisable references, even a mistake made in Spider-Man, i.e. that hand on face bit, all complete a film, much better than previous attempts by the same makers, e.g. Date Movie, Meet the Spartans. Worth watching!
Based on IMDb rating and on critics and reviews everywhere, I expected a horrible film, just one more of those awful spoof movies Hollywood produces dozens each year. Well, since its beginning, though, it showed that it would be quite a great surprise. It is campy and silly, off course, and that is not a problemit is a well made comedy that knows what it does. It is a dark humor parody of famous superhero films and stories suchBatman, Spiderman, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. Most of the jokes are nice (how to say that a film with a "Tom Cruise" sketch like that is bad?!) and I could not avoid but to laugh a lot. Critics are unfair; much worse films (including "serious" superhero acclaimed pyrotechnical crap) receive more favorable opinions, what is hard to understand.
The very act of writing critically about Superhero Movie inspires something of an existential crisis – no one likely to turn out for it is reading this review, and anybody reading this review is probably not inclined to see it under any circumstances.
The Extended version of Superhero Movie features not only some more violent scenes but also several new dirty jokes that aren't included in the theatrical version. Altogether this adds to a total difference of approximately 6 minutes. Just in case you're a fan of this movie the Extended version is worth a try.
